In the Beginning

Robin Matthews receives a mysterious letter after dropping out of college, asking her to come to Harper's Island and work for the local newspaper, Harper's Globe. She immediately leaves school and comes to the island, living with the Editor-in-Chief, Sparky Mackle.

Robin heads around the Island, promoting the newspaper's site, and meets Brent Cyr. They begin dating shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, Robin learns of a set of murders that occurred on the Island in 2001, and becomes engrossed in attempting to answer unresolved questions. John Wakefield also begins uploading disturbing torture videos shot by Cody under the title of "Dangerous Wreck" (relevant to the videos and also an anagram for Dunn-Wakefield).

On a date with Brent, the two are filmed going skinnydipping, frightening Robin away. They decide to vacation in Seattle, where they meet with Ben Wellington. Brent and Ben become drunk and offensive and Robin leaves angrily.

The Wedding Party Arrives

On her way back to the Island, Robin notices the Tarapunga in port. The Tarapunga brings the attendants of the Dunn and Wellington wedding to the Island; unseen, Ben Wellington is mutilated by the propeller as the boat leaves port.

On the island, Robin decides to confront Brent about the Seattle trip. Upon arriving at his house she discovers his parent's home appears to have been ransacked and Brent's cell phone is left inside. The uploader Cheshire Cat attempts to give Robin a VHS tape, but startles Robin, who attempts to fend off her "attacker" and escapes.

Trish Wellington is confronted by her ex, Hunter Jennings, who wishes to win her back. Unknown to Trish, her father Thomas Wellington is paying Hunter to stop the wedding. Abby Mills is forced to reconcile with her father and Jimmy Mance. Marty Dunn discovers Thomas Wellington's plan, and confronts him about it. Marty is murdered by dismemberment a short time later.

Robin confronts Sheriff Charlie Mills about Brent's disappearance, only to be rebuffed. She asks the community for help while a new Dangerous Wreck video is released, depicting her at a frat party at school.

Trish and Henry Dunn set the wedding party on a treasure hunt. Reverend Fain is trapped by a snare and beheaded by a head spade. Chloe Carter finds John Wakefield's grave, and Cal Vandeusen is caught in a snare. Kelly Seaver reunites with Abby Mills, and the two plan to live together in Los Angeles. Kelly is found hanging in her home a short time later. Chloe rescues Cal from the snare as Lucy Daramour hunts for her dog, Gigi, only to fall into a pitfall and be set on fire.

Robin goes with a deputy to Brent's house, only to find the doors locked. When the deputy beckons her back to the car, Robin discovers a set of keys to the Candlewick Inn.

A Death Discovered

Robin makes a menacing video for Cheshire Cat, stating that she is "coming for" him. John Wakefield posts another Dangerous Wreck video depicting Peck ratting out Robin for helping him avoid the initial kidnapping. Robin goes to the Candlewick Inn and meets Maggie Krell, who tells her where Cheshire Cat lives. Robin goes to the house to find shelves full of video tapes. She takes a few before running out of the house.

At the local clinic, a red ink is discovered in Kelly's eyes during autopsy. As news spreads of Kelly's death, Abby begins an investigation parallel to her father's. J.D. Dunn is hit by Shane Pierce's truck and held hostage. Henry discovers Thomas's plan for Hunter and becomes unsure about Trish's feelings. Hunter blackmails Thomas for $50,000 and leaves the island. As he leaves, Hunter is shot in the head by a rigged shotgun. Sheriff Mills discovers a taunting message left on a newspaper article in Kelly's home.

The groomsmen discover Hunter's remains and take Marty's bag, sinking Hunter's boat. Trish discovers Richard Allen's affair with Katherine Wellington and becomes upset. Abby meets Robin at the Harper's Globe office. Concerned about the money, Joel Booth is chosen to hide it in the woods. Cheshire Cat sneaks into Robin's room in Sparky Mackle's basement, leaving a video for her. Malcolm Ross startles Booth, causing him to accidentally shoot himself, hemorrhaging through his femoral artery. Trish drunkenly falls into the Inn's pool and is nearly trapped under the closing pool cover, but is narrowly rescued by Richard.

Trish goes on a bike trip with her father and they become stranded in the woods. They are attacked by a German Shepherd released by Cole Harkin. Abby goes to her father's house and discovers his attic. Henry reports Reverend Fain's disappearance and finds a disemboweled raccoon in the church. Sheriff Mills discovers Reverend Fain's remains in the water and Thomas is killed by a falling head spade in the church.

Charlie begins an investigation into Thomas's murder as J.D. and Abby discover Uncle Marty's body. Robin heads back to Cheshire Cat's home, stumbling upon Thomas's body on her way. She discovers the house has been ransacked and apologizes for leading the killer to him. They and Henry return to the attic and accuse the Sheriff lying about Wakefield's death. On her way home, Robin discovers Andrew Cullen's body in the woods and reclaims her necklace. Abby and Henry dig up Wakefield's grave while Richard, the lead suspect in Thomas's murder, is speared by a harpoon to the chest. J.D. runs away to Cole Harkin's cabin, upon discovering that Charlie is intending on bringing him into the station.

Robin returns to the Harper's Globe offices, discovering her internet connection has been cut, allowing her only to access HarpersGlobe.com.

Hunting for a Suspect

Charlie arrives at the Candlewick to search people's rooms and discovers Marty's cell phone in a pair of J.D.'s pants. Meanwhile, Malcolm panicks and attempts to free himself of the money, but is forced to reveal the truth about Booth. Abby helps Trish cope with the death of her father while J.D. is tracked and arrested. Thanks to prompting from Cole, Abby soon discovers her mother had a relationship with Wakefield. Malcolm goes to the incinerator to burn the money, but is soon murdered nearby, his remains tossed into the fire. Abby reunites with Jimmy and Madison is kidnapped. Robin returns home, discovering Sparky's throat slit and a message left on his body.

The wedding guests head to the marina, but a few are asked to stay and search for Madison. J.D. manages to escape from his cell following the murder of Deputy Garrett, leaving Shane behind. Charlie heads into the woods to find Cole, triggering a trap which impales him in the leg. While hunting for Madison, the remains of Malcolm and Richard are discovered. When the group reunites, the power is cut and they learn that the rest of the guests have left. Robin decides to stay on the island, and heads to Brent's house to find him. On her way, she trips over a dead woman on the street. A plan to get help is formulated as Charlie is forced to watch Cole die. Robin arrives at Brent's house and finds his body floating face-down in the pool. Abby discovers J.D. bleeding to death on the docks and finds Henry nearby, covered in blood.

Charlie is taken to the island clinic and is patched up by Cal. Shane shows up at the Inn, causing trouble. Abby discovers several pages from Wakefield's diary indicating she could be his daughter, which causes several people to suspect her. Beth is discovered missing and the guests head into a series of tunnels beneath the Candlewick. Danny finds Beth, while Abby is separated from the group, finding Madison shortly after. Madison is reunited with the group, casting suspicion on Charlie, and Katherine is murdered in her sleep.
