Trivia
The yacht portrayed as the Tarapunga in the Harper's Island television series is actually named the "Tarapunga." Along with its sister ship, the Takapu, the Tarapunga was built in 1980 and served as a Royal New Zealand Navy inshore hydrographic survey vessel before being converted to a private liveaboard trawler yacht. The Tarapunga is berthed at the Deep Cove North Shore Marina in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The Tarapunga is named for a species of red-billed sea gull found in New Zealand called the "tarapunga," revered by the native Maori people, who believe that the spirits of their dead warriors inhabit the birds' bodies.
