Robin Matthews comes to Harper's Island to create a digital archive of the local newspaper's (Harper's Globe) files and create a community website. Robin is considered the main protagonist on the Harper's Globe web-based social show.

Background
Robin grew up in the small town of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Her mother died when she was young. She went to George Nelson Tremper High School, where she was on the dance team freshman year. Instead of spending her time drinking, like the vast majority of her peers, she landed a job at the local Jelly Belly factory, where she did quality control. During her senior year, she built her own social networking site. The site's success managed to get her a scholarship to Washington Pacific University, where she majored in Online Communications.
At school, she served as an RA for three years. During her last summer session, she began a blog out of loneliness, as her friend Ashley had gone on a trip to Dubai. During the session, someone began stealing clothing from the laundry room, including Robin's sweatshirt. Two months later, Robin caught the person who did it, which made her more popular with her charges, as her enforcement had not made them too happy with her.
Ashley returned in the fall, and Robin continued as the RA for the 3rd floor of the Port dorm for at least the beginning of the session. During the new session, Robin had overheard plans that were being made by a fraternity on campus to haze their freshman pledges, and warned one of the pledges who was residing in her building, a boy named Peck who had become friendly with her. On the night of the hazing, Sept. 4, 2008, Ashley convinces Robin to attend a party, which she later discovers is being held by the fraternity that she had ratted out. After Peck is initiated, having tried to avoid the brutal hazing by planting decoys, he begins bragging to his friends about what had happened. Cody, the fraternity president, gets Peck to tell him that Robin was the one who told him about the hazing.
Intent on humiliating Robin, Cody and Peck pretend to have come to terms with the situation and forgive Robin, and go on a drinking binge with her and Ashley. After becoming intoxicated, the group decides to go for a drive. In the backseat, Peck attempts to sexually assault Robin, who opens the car door in order to get Cody to pull over. Ashley becomes upset at Robin and tells her to stop being a "frigid bitch" and lighten up. Robin agrees to rejoin the group on the condition that she can drive. Ashley and Peck begin to make out in the backseat as Cody videotapes them, and Robin becomes increasingly upset. As she drives along Route 530 outside Arlington, Robin sees a person standing in the middle of the road. Peck and Cody recognize him as the person who vandalized Cody's car and attacked Peck earlier that night. Cody tells Robin to hit the man, and he pushes her right leg, causing the car to accelerate. Robin swerves to avoid the man, and she loses control of the car after hitting an antique bear leg trap that had been left on the road. The car runs off the road and overturns, coming to rest against a tree. Robin crawls out of the wreck to get help, but, because the accident occurs in a remote place, she finds on one. As she returns, the car catches fire and explodes. As an emergency vehicle approaches, Robin runs away. She is the only survivor, and Cody, Peck, and Ashley die at the scene.
Upset and haunted by the experience, Robin dropped out of school. Unbeknownst to Robin, John Wakefield had orchestrated the crash and had killed her friend Ashley, starting the fire that consumed the car. Wakefield, having taken the video camera from Cody, filmed Robin running away. Wakefield later posts a series of videos showing the events of that night on HarpersGlobe.com under the username, "Dangerous Wreck." Finding Robin's ID at the scene, Wakefield develops a plot to lure her to Harper's Island with the help of Henry Dunn. Hometown Press, Henry's multimedia company, offers Robin a job to come to Harper's Island to digitize the Harper's Globe newspaper archives and to set up an online community. Robin eagerly accepts the job offer, hoping to make a fresh start and leave her past behind.
With her, Robin brings her necklace, which depicts a robin, presumably due to her name. As revealed in "R.I.P. Cheshire Cat" the necklace is actually a locket. When asked by fans, Robin says that her necklace was a gift, and she would have no idea where to find another one. In "I Sleep on the Bottom," she states that her necklace is her lucky charm, and she never goes anywhere without it. A picture of a caged bird appears in the HarpersGlobe.com logo, possibly as a reference to Robin's association with the bird.
On the Island
When Robin arrives on Harper's Island, Sparky Mackle, the editor-in-chief of Harper's Globe, allows her to stay in his basement. While compiling newspaper articles for the archive, Robin finds a box of articles on the 2001 murders committed by John Wakefield. When she asks Sparky about the found material, he indicates that he thought he had destroyed it years ago. He reveals to Robin how traumatic the brutal murders were for the island residents. After studying the articles about the massacre, Robin wonders how the islanders live with what happened to their loved ones, what they might be thinking, and what they may be hiding.
As part of her job, Robin attempts to build awareness for the website by handing out flyers on the street. On one such occasion, she meets islander Brent Cyr, who she quickly hits it off with. The two begin dating a short time later. On one of these dates, Brent invites Robin to his house, and the two go skinny-dipping in the pool. A short time later, a video of Brent and Robin in the pool ("Skinnydipping... My POV... She's Naked") is posted on HarpersGlobe.com by the user, "Cheshire Cat." Robin is so disgusted and scared by the Cheshire Cat video that she almost leaves the site, but she reconsiders after receiving many supportive messages from other users.
Later, during a trip to Seattle, Robin has a fight with Brent over his rude conduct after he meets an old fraternity brother, Ben Wellington, in a bar, and the two get drunk. Ben is on his way to the wedding of his cousin, Trish Wellington, who is marrying Henry Dunn. Robin returns to the hotel room, but Brent stays out all night with Ben. As Robin returns to Harper's Island alone, she sees the Dunn-Wellington wedding party arriving. Robin continually receives apologetic text messages from Brent, prompting her to go see him at his parents' house. As shown in "Watching Her... She Doesnt Know Im There.," Robin goes there and finds the house has been ransacked. She is approached from behind by Andrew Cullen, who had posted the earlier video under the username, Cheshire Cat. Andrew attempts to hand Robin a VHS tape, brushing it against her neck. Assuming she is being attacked, Robin fights back. In the scuffle, Robin loses her necklace, and she then runs out of the house.
Soon after the attack, Robin goes to Sheriff Charlie Mills to file a report that Brent is missing and that she has been attacked by the Cheshire Cat. The Sheriff is too busy investigating Kelly Seaver's tragic death to listen to Robin, and she urges members of the website to call the Sheriff station, asking for them to help Robin. Soon, one of the Sheriff's deputies goes with Robin to Brent's parents' house. The house is unfortunately locked, but Robin finds a set of Candlewick Inn keys with the Cheshire Cat avatar on them outside of the house.
Already unnerved by the Cheshire Cat videos, after receiving messages from online community members expressing alarm over the videos being posted by another unknown user, Dangerous Wreck, Robin acknowledges that she is shown in his most recent video post, "Hi, Robin." Robin posts a video asking him to stop, but Dangerous Wreck, also known as "DW," continues to post videos, each of which shows a portion of the events of the night of the pledge hazing, the fraternity party, and the subsequent car accident. Robin also proceeds to tell the Cheshire Cat that she is coming for him, as she has his Candlewick keys. Robin goes to Maggie Krell, manager of the Candlewick, to ask about the keys, and she informs Robin that the keys belong to "a young man who delivers shrimp to the hotel" and tells her where his house is.
After talking with Maggie, Robin goes to Andrew's house and finds several tapes meant for her. They include footage of Christopher Cullen's body hanging in the Tree of Woe, and Robin cannot make sense of them. Not long afterward, Abby Mills stops by the Harper's Globe office to pick up a 1991 article about her best friend, Henry Dunn, that she had requested for a scrapbook she is making as a wedding present.
Andrew sneaks into Robin's basement room and leaves a video of Brent being kidnapped. After viewing the video, Robin goes crazy, blaming Cheshire Cat, but meanwhile, Shiori and FemaleProdigy post videos telling her that he is simply trying to help. Robin listens to them, and decides to go back to Andrew's house to talk things through with him. On the way, she passes by the church and sees Cole Harkin there, as well as Thomas Wellington's dead body ("Someone Is Dead!").
Robin finds Andrew's house ransacked and goes to find Sparky for help, but, while trying to find her way through the woods, she stumbles across Andrew's dead body. In his hands is Robin's necklace, which she reclaims, and on his body is a tape showing Brent being held captive. In the video, Brent conveys a message to Robin from Dangerous Wreck, telling her that she was brought to the island to document DW's "work, his murders."
Before his death, in an attempt to help Robin, Andrew set up a blog with automatically-generated posts (andycat.com). Through these posted messages, in addition to revealing his identity and motives, Andrew discloses the location of his hidden boat for Robin to use to escape from the island. In one blog post, Andrew also tells Robin, "He will not stop until he sees you dead." Robin's phone and internet connections are cut off, but she discovers that she can still access the HarpersGlobe.com website. Other community members relay Andrew's posthumous andycat.com messages to Robin via the board on her profile page.
Robin goes in search of Sparky and finds him dead in his kitchen with the message "Leave Island and Brent Dies" written in blood on a newspaper draped over his body. Instead of leaving on a chartered boat with the other island residents, Robin decides to remain on the island, and she goes in search of Brent. She finds Brent's dead body floating in his swimming pool.
Now alone and realizing that her past will not go away, Robin finally tells the story of the night of the fraternity party at WPU, revealing her role in the car accident and in Ashley's death. Soon after this, Robin goes to the Sheriff's station and finds Deputy Garrett dead there. She goes to the marina to see if anybody is left on the Island, but as soon as she arrives there, the marina explodes (as shown in the Harper's Island episode, "Snap"). Robin is attacked by the killer in the woods, but she manages to escape. Later, she is attacked again by the same individual wielding a boarding knife.
Robin escapes her attacker once more and retreats to the Harper's Globe office, where she locks her killer outside. She pleads for help as the killer bangs on the door but soon sees a video of Cody and Ashley that is playing on a laptop computer which reveals that they were murdered ("There Is Only One Way Out On Harper's Island"). At the end of the video, a noose is shown, with the words "There Is Only One Way Out." Robin then discovers an actual noose hanging behind her. She sets the camera down, apologizes to all she has hurt, and hangs herself. John Wakefield then appears, sees Robin's apparently lifeless body, looks at the camera, and says, "You served your purpose," before walking away. In the last few seconds of the episode, Robin is seen moving and gasping for air.
Later, in "Surviving Harper's Island", Robin reveals that she is still alive. Before hanging herself from the noose, she had attached a harness to herself that gave her more support and therefore saved her life. After Wakefield left the room, Robin got out of the noose safely, found Andrew's boat, and, unbeknownst to Wakefield, left the island. Robin's current whereabouts are unknown.
