Background
Jimmy Mance grew up on Harper's Island. He dated Abby Mills in high school. At the time, Sheriff Charlie Mills developed a dislike for Jimmy, due to his relationship with Abby.
On the day of the 2001 murders, Jimmy and Abby had planned to go camping together. On their way to the camping site, they witness several explosions in the marina, and they run to see what happened. Sheriff Charlie Mills instructs the two to go home. Jimmy later rescues Abby by distracting the killer long enough for her to escape.
Jimmy discovers the Sheriff is sending Abby to Los Angeles only in time to see her boat leaving the docks. Abby does not have a chance to say goodbye to Jimmy, and she does not contact him during the seven years she is away from the Island.
Recent Events
In "Whap", Jimmy is excited about Abby's return, flirting with her upon her arrival at the marina. Later, while working on Jimmy's fishing boat, the Sea-Jay, Shane Pierce and Jimmy discuss the upcoming wedding of Henry Dunn and Trish Wellington, and Jimmy mentions that Abby has returned to the Island. Shane warns Jimmy about becoming involved with Abby again, since she left him without even saying goodbye seven years earlier. As Jimmy helps the captain of the Tarapunga remove a piece of rope that had been caught in the rudder, he narrowly misses finding the severed head of Ben Wellington under the boat. That evening, at The Cannery, Jimmy challenges Abby to a game of pool, and he wins a bet after she scratches trying to make a winning shot. Jimmy and Abby are interrupted, as a fight breaks out between Henry's brother, J.D. Dunn, and Shane. Abby tries to break up the fight with a pool cue, but she is stopped by her father, Sheriff Mills.
The next day (in "Crackle"), as Abby jogs in the woods, she stops to observe a deer. She is grabbed from behind by Jimmy, who covers her mouth so that Shane can shoot the deer with his bow. Furious, Abby stomps on Jimmy's toe and yells, causing Shane to miss. Jimmy tries to explain to Abby that they have been culling deer for years to prevent overpopulation on the Island, but Abby runs away, disgusted. Jimmy and Shane discuss Abby as they walk back to Shane's truck, where they discover a dead deer on the hood, with the word "PSYCHO" written in its blood on the windshield. Later, Henry visits Jimmy at the marina to discuss Shane's conduct and invites Shane and Jimmy to a bonfire party at Harmon Beach that evening. When Henry Dunn finds a severed deer head in the bathtub in his cabin at the Candlewick Inn, Abby and Henry suspect Shane, and Abby offers to talk with Jimmy about him. Jimmy tells Abby about the dead deer they discovered on Shane's truck earlier, and he promises to try to get Shane to back off. He also opens up to Abby about how much everyone missed her, especially her dad. That evening, at the bonfire party, when Shane and Jimmy arrive, Henry punches Shane.
In "Bang," as Abby talks with Nikki Bolton at the Cannery, Jimmy enters, making a delivery. Abby decides to accompany Jimmy on his delivery route. Jimmy lets Abby drive his truck, and she mentions that the truck needs front-end alignment. Jimmy and Abby discuss their respective love lives, when he gets a radio call about his girlfriend needing help with her truck. Curious, Abby offers to go along, where she discovers that Jimmy's "girlfriend" is Julia Mitchell, an elderly woman who Jimmy often helps. Jimmy agrees to help Julia get her groceries, and Abby departs for the newspaper office. Later that night, disturbed by the warning she receives from the psychic at the bachelorette party, Abby pays Jimmy a visit, and they spend the night together.
The next morning ("Thwack"), Abby is surprised when her father arrives at Jimmy's house to meet him for breakfast, and she is floored when she discovers that they have become friends. The three go out for breakfast together. When Abby later tells Jimmy about discovering articles and autopsy photos about the Wakefield murders in her father's attic, Jimmy is reluctant to jump to conclusions.
The next day ("Thrack, Splat, Sizzle"), as everyone prepares to leave the Island, Jimmy runs into Abby at the Candlewick, and they discuss the past. Later, at the Marina, Abby apologizes to Jimmy for leaving and never contacting him. She tells him that he saved her life on the day of the Wakefield massacre, and Jimmy tells her that he had seen her there but never wanted her to feel like she owed him anything. Abby flirts with Jimmy and then kisses him.
In "Gurgle," Jimmy says goodbye to Abby as she gets ready to head to the boat. At dusk, Jimmy returns to the Candlewick when he doesn't see Abby on the chartered boat leaving the Island. Jimmy and Abby go to the Sheriff's office to use the shortwave radio, but they find it destroyed. They also find Shane in his jail cell, and he tells them about Deputy Garrett's murder and J.D.'s escape. Shane bargains with Abby to let him out in exchange for the information about where Charlie went. Abby and Jimmy drive to Harkin's cabin and find Sheriff Mills inside. Jimmy wants to take the injured Charlie to the clinic, but Charlie insists on going to the Marina. Jimmy drives to the Marina with Abby and Charlie. Charlie tells Abby to leave on Jimmy's boat and get to the mainland, but she refuses. Suddenly, Sully slams against the truck window, informing them that J.D. has escaped. Jimmy and Abby leave Charlie in the truck and walk slowly down the ramp onto the docks. After hearing a sound on one of the docks, Jimmy goes to investigate, leaving Abby alone. Abby finds J.D. on the dock, dying from a stomach wound.
Jimmy and Henry carry J.D.'s body to the clinic ("Seep"). Jimmy finds some papers on the floor that have fallen out of J.D.'s pocket and gives them to Henry. Abby later shows Wakefield's prison diary to Jimmy, and he mentions the pages from J.D.'s pocket that he gave to Henry. Abby and Jimmy return to the Candlewick, and Abby asks Henry for the missing pages. After she reads the diary pages, which indicate that her mother had a child with Wakefield, Abby tells Henry, Trish, and Jimmy that she could be Wakefield's daughter. Overhearing the conversation, Shane spreads this news to the rest of the group, prompting Henry to argue loudly with him. At the end of the argument, all eyes are on a distraught Abby, who runs out of the room. Jimmy later finds Abby outside sitting on some steps on the hotel porch, looking over the Wakefield diary. Abby reveals to Jimmy that she fears that she is cause of the murders, and she tells him about the ominous phone calls she has received. Jimmy vows to protect Abby and suggests they go back inside. When Shane denies Abby reentry to the Candlewick, Henry starts a fight with Shane. After the others break up the fight, they notice Beth is missing. As the group searches for Beth, Henry discovers a secret door to a series of underground tunnels. In the tunnels, Danny and Sully follow one blood trail, while Henry, Abby, and Jimmy take another route. Abby crawls into a small tunnel and is trapped by a falling grate. Henry and Jimmy return to find tools to free Abby. When they ask Shane about using the tools that he usually keeps in his truck, Shane reveals that Trish took the truck. When Trish, Abby, Shea, and Madison pull up at the Candlewick in Shane's truck, everyone rushes outside to meet them, and Jimmy hugs Abby.
In the lounge at the Candlewick ("Snap"), the group discusses Charlie Mills's potential motives for kidnapping Madison as Jimmy tries to comfort Abby. After Henry and Shane discover Katherine dead, Henry asks Jimmy to ready his boat to transport everyone off the island. Jimmy leaves with Shane to refuel the boat. At the marina, Jimmy and Shane notice the state police seaplane at the dock. Jimmy and Shane tie up the boat near a gas pump, only to find the pump not working due to the power outage. Shane heads to the generator nearby, noting an oxygen tank. Shane then discovers the dead state police officers in the water. Jimmy yells for Shane to fire up the generator. Shane starts the generator, which sparks at him, and he yells at Jimmy to get away from the pump. As the remainder of the group arrives at the marina, the gas reservoirs all over the marina ignite, causing a massive explosion. Henry prevents Abby from running to help Jimmy. The group immediately comes under sniper fire and retreats to the Cannery, assuming that Jimmy died in the explosion.
Later that evening, Charlie's SUV arrives with its flashers on, carrying an unconscious Jimmy on the hood. The vehicle leaves, depositing Jimmy in the parking lot, and Abby runs out, discovering Jimmy is alive. Henry and Shane carry Jimmy inside. Taped to Jimmy's hand is the key to Abby's room at the Candlewick, and this is interpreted as an invitation to Abby. Despite Henry's objections, Abby departs for the Candlewick alone. Abby arrives at the Inn and discovers her father waiting in her room. Charlie asks about Jimmy, and Abby tells him he's safe. Charlie explains that he made a deal with John Wakefield to keep Jimmy alive, trading his own life for Jimmy's. Abby then witnesses her father's murder, and Wakefield appears to Abby outside the hotel.
Still unconscious, Jimmy is attended to by Nikki and Shane. When Wakefield arrives at the Cannery, he kills Nikki. Shane then fights with Wakefield, as Trish, Chloe, Shea, and Madison escape. Trish leads the others to Charlie Mills's attic, assuming that Jimmy has also been killed by Wakefield. Jimmy later wakes up in The Cannery, finding Shane and Nikki dead, and walks to the town to find it deserted. Jimmy then heads for the Church after hearing the churchbell ring. When he arrives, he finds the group on edge, as they have just discovered that Wakefield has kidnapped Chloe. Henry orders the group to split up and block all known exits to the tunnels, and Jimmy and Trish take Nikki's car to block the tunnel exit at the manhole cover near the Candlewick. In the attic, Shea reviews the files Madison has been perusing, discovering a Seattle Police Department arrest report on Jimmy. Trish is half asleep, holding a shotgun, as she and Jimmy sit in Nikki's car, with a wheel over the manhole access to the tunnels. As Jimmy reaches for the gun, Trish awakens suddenly, and Jimmy warns her against sleeping with a loaded gun. Trish goes back to sleep as Jimmy looks around suspiciously.
In the morning ("Gasp"), Trish awakens in the car, discovering that both Jimmy and her shotgun are missing. Jimmy appears suddenly, announcing that he has seen a ship nearby, and goes to the trunk to grab a few flares. Trish is disturbed that Jimmy left her alone in the car, sleeping. Trish insists on staying with the car, but Jimmy convinces her to follow him to the bluffs to signal the ship. Jimmy and Trish arrive at the bluffs, but there is no ship in sight. Trish steps closer to the edge, and Jimmy follows her.
After capturing Wakefield and locking him in the jail, Henry goes to look for Trish. Finding the car empty, he angrily returns to the Sheriff's office, where Shea reveals that she and Madison found a police file on Jimmy in Mills's attic. The group's suspicions that Jimmy is helping Wakefield are enhanced when Jimmy returns saying Trish has fallen over the bluff. Henry attacks Jimmy, but is restrained by Abby. Henry then agrees to go with Jimmy, Sully, and Abby to the bluff to find Trish. When they don't find Trish immediately, Henry and Sully want to shoot Jimmy, but Abby again intervenes. Trish appears saying that she slipped and fell. Near the base of the bluffs, Trish has found a boathouse with a radio. Trish leads the group to the boathouse, and Jimmy and Sully make contact with the Coast Guard on the radio. As they walk back to the Sheriff's office, Jimmy explains his past to Abby, confessing that he initially wanted to make her pay for hurting him, but that he loved her again the moment she returned. The two kiss and hug. Abby and Jimmy meet up with Shea and Madison in the woods, learning of Wakefield's escape. Abby sends Shea and Madison to the boathouse to let the Coast Guard know about Wakefield, and Jimmy gives Shea his rifle before they part ways. Abby and Jimmy continue to search in the woods for Henry and Trish, as, unbeknownst to them, Henry stabs Trish, killing her, a short distance away.
In "Sigh," Abby calls out for Henry as she and Jimmy hunt for Henry and Trish. Jimmy appeals for her to be quiet or she may draw Wakefield out. Abby discovers Trish lying dead on the trail and mourns her as Wakefield and Henry watch from a distance. When Wakefield asks Henry if he knows what he has to do, Henry replies that he must "kill Abby." Abby and Jimmy go to the boat house, discovering everyone is gone, along with the boat. Jimmy radios the coast guard and is informed that Sully and Henry left to meet them at the marina. As they head there, they hear a gunshot, and run toward it. Abby and Jimmy find Henry alone in the woods, and Henry explains that he just saw Wakefield. Abby asks where Sully and the others are, and Henry states that he hasn't seen them and that he has been looking for Trish. Abby and Jimmy tell Henry about finding Trish dead, but they discover her body is missing when they return to show him. Henry suggests that Trish may still be alive, feigning concern for her, and he pretends to search, leading Abby and Jimmy to the church. On the way to the church, Jimmy confides to Abby that Henry's actions don't make sense. Jimmy says that he would never leave Abby alone like Henry left Trish. They find Trish's body in the church, and Abby tries to console Henry. Wakefield appears and fights with Jimmy, as Abby runs out of the church. Wakefield yells to Henry, "She's getting away," and Jimmy then realizes that Henry is helping Wakefield. Jimmy burns Wakefield in the stomach with a flare, starting a fire in the church. As Jimmy runs out, Henry shoots in Jimmy's direction.
Henry later captures Jimmy and ties him up in the garage of the house that Henry has set up for himself and Abby to live in. When Abby tries to escape, she finds Jimmy in the garage. Henry catches Abby and returns her to the house, revealing his intention to force Jimmy to sign a confession, since Shea and Madison know that Wakefield had an accomplice. Henry later tells Abby that Jimmy has agreed to sign the confession if he can see Abby once more. Henry takes Abby to the garage to see Jimmy, where she apologizes to Jimmy for leaving him. Abby kisses Jimmy, passing to him a nail to use to pick the lock on his handcuffs. Abby enrages Henry by proclaiming her love for Jimmy. Henry strikes Abby, and she stabs Henry in the foot with an awl and runs away. Henry runs after her carrying a boarding knife, leaving Jimmy tied up in the garage. Jimmy uses the nail that Abby passed to him to pick the lock on his handcuffs. He escapes and runs to the edge of the cliff where Henry has cornered Abby, pushing Henry off the bluff and falling with him.
Abby follows via a trail and finds Jimmy lying on a rocky beach with the boarding knife lying on the ground beside him. Jimmy looks up, and sees that Henry is walking up behind Abby. Now aware of Henry's presence, Abby turns and runs Henry through the stomach with the boarding knife. As he dies, Henry tells Abby that he loves her.
Survival
Sometime later, Abby and Jimmy are rescued from Harper's Island by the U.S. Coast Guard, and the two embrace and kiss on the way to the mainland.
