Background

J.D. was born in Tacoma, Washington to Frank and Karen Dunn, two teachers at Tacoma North High School. He spent summers on Harper's Island with his adoptive brother Henry Dunn. On the island, J.D. had a long-time rivalry with Shane Pierce.

J.D.'s parents died when he was a teenager, and he was sent to live with an uncle, Marty Dunn, who was made his legal guardian. Sometime later, J.D. acted on a suicide pact he had with a friend. Henry managed to save J.D.

Following his suicide attempt, J.D. was sent to a psychiatric facility for a year to monitor him.

On the Island

J.D. comes to the Island with the rest of the wedding party, and is staying at the Candlewick Inn. Abby Mills describes J.D. as having a sweet side, while Henry worries that he may become dangerous.

J.D. reveals his tattoos. ("Whap")

In "Whap," J.D. heads to The Cannery alone, and Abby volunteers to look after him. J.D. notices Kelly Seaver's tattoo, and the two begin flirting. Shane intervenes and asks J.D. about a rumor that he had recently tried to kill himself. He goes on to mention Kelly cutting herself, which incites J.D. to get into a bar fight with Shane.

In "Crackle," J.D. expresses resentment toward Henry, who is accepted among the Islanders. He is seen washing blood from his hands. J.D. later meets with Kelly, who he has sex with. J.D. is present at the beach party that night, and is clearly pleased when Henry punches Shane.

J.D. is captured by Shane, who believes he is responsible for Kelly's death. ("Ka-Blam")

In "Ka-Blam," after being informed of Kelly's death, Abby immediately goes to tell J.D. the news, and he simply reacts, "That's wierd." J.D. informs Abby that John Wakefield's name was tattooed multiple times on Kelly's body. Later, as J.D. walks through the woods listening to his iPod, he is hit by Shane's truck. Sheriff Mills visits Shane at his house and asks if he has seen J.D. After the Sheriff leaves, Shane opens the back of his truck, where J.D. is tied up, and Shane accuses him of murdering Kelly. Abby goes to Shane's house to question him and finds J.D. in a shed, bound and gagged, with a noose around his neck, his feet barely supported by a chair. Shane arrives, and, in order to buy some time, Abby goes off on a tangent about how Wakefield killed Kelly. Sheriff Mills arrives, and, in the scuffle, J.D. is knocked off the chair. Shane grabs J.D. as Abby runs to cut the rope holding him up, saving him.

In "Thwack," J.D. and Madison Allen play with firecrackers at the Inn. Madison later comes to visit J.D. in his room. Madison wants J.D. to pull more pranks with her, but the conversation quickly turns to disliking family members. When Henry finds a firecracker in the Church, he believes that J.D. planted a disemboweled raccoon carcass on the altar. Henry tells J.D. to leave the Island, to which J.D. retorts he has "one more surprise."

Abby and J.D. find Uncle Marty's body. ("Sploosh")

In "Sploosh," after Thomas Wellington's murder, J.D. is seen by Madison outside the Church. J.D. later sneaks into Abby's room at the Inn and startles her when she returns. Abby confronts J.D. about his "surprise", to which he replies he had hidden a roman candle in the unity candle. He claims to have seen Wakefield and begs Abby to follow him to a discovery he has made. J.D. leads Abby into the woods, crossing a footbridge. He pulls out a knife, startling Abby, and instructs her to look up into the tree, where she sees a pair of legs hanging. J.D. cuts the legs down, unwittingly releasing Uncle Marty's upper half from the tree, as well. Abby returns to the Inn to find Henry and tells him about finding Uncle Marty's body. Henry is less inclined to believe J.D., however, and attacks him, accusing J.D. of hating Uncle Marty. Abby pulls them apart, and she leads them to her father's attic. Abby finds postcards addressed to Charlie reading "LIAR," and J.D. finds evidence nearby, suggesting that Wakefield may still be alive. Abby and the others find Charlie at the Inn, inform him of Marty's death, and confront him with the picture of Wakefield found in the attic. J.D. resolves to dig up Wakefield's grave, and Charlie locks him in the Inn's pantry. Madison later releases J.D. from the pantry and, believing he is the lead suspect in Uncle Marty's death, J.D. hides in Cole Harkin's cabin.

In "Thrack, Splat, Sizzle," Sheriff Mills discovers Uncle Marty's cell phone in J.D.'s room at the Inn. J.D. is tracked by bloodhounds to the Marina. Henry tackles J.D. on the docks, and J.D. is arrested.

In "Gurgle," as the wedding guests prepare to leave the Island, Christopher "Sully" Sullivan remarks that, at one time, J.D. and Henry seemed to be very close. At the Sheriff's office, Sheriff Mills questions J.D. about Harkin, and J.D. tells Mills of Harkin's whereabouts. In the jail area, Shane taunts J.D., and Deputy Garrett enters the holding area, warning Shane to be quiet. The lights in the station go out, and Garrett is shot in the back. The shortwave radio is heard chattering and another shot silences it. The lights come back on, and J.D. retrieves Garrett's keys, letting himself out. J.D. tosses the keys down next to Garrett's body, ignoring Shane's pleas to be set free, and J.D. flees.

Later at the Marina, as Sully, Beth Barrington, Chloe Carter, and Cal Vandeusen try to find a boat with which to leave the Island. They see J.D. running along the dock, and Sully goes after him. When Jimmy Mance, Abby, and Sheriff Mills arrive at the Marina in Jimmy's truck, Sully slams against the truck window, informing them that J.D. has escaped. Jimmy runs out, and Charlie gives Abby a second gun as she leaves. Jimmy and Abby walk slowly down the ramp onto the docks. After hearing a sound on one of the docks, Jimmy goes to investigate, leaving Abby alone. In the opposite direction, Abby hears the sound of someone struggling and walks down the dock to see who it is.

Death

J.D. warns Abby before losing consciousness. ("Gurgle")

Abby finds J.D. lying near a boat, with a mortal stomach wound and bleeding from his mouth. She asks who did this, and J.D. tells her, "It's you Abby... It's all about you." He then loses consciousness and passes away. Abby turns around to find Henry standing behind her, crying, with his hands covered in blood.
